The Netflix Survey

I have 26 Netflix friends, just over half of whom have rated at least 500 movies. Only seven have rated less than 200 movies. (* includes me.)
< 200 ratings: 7
200 - 500: 5
500 - 1000: 10*
> 1000: 5
Geographically, they are primarily in Texas.

Texas: 20*
Washington, D.C.: 3
California: 1
Illinois: 1
Minnesota: 1
Washington: 1
The best rating a movie can receive on Netflix is 5 stars. Most of the movies and TV shows best-rated among my friends had 11 ratings each. A handful had 12 ratings. This means the highest possible rating a movie could get would be 60 stars (12 people rating it 5 stars). Only one movie had a 60 star rating:
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Other exceptionally high-scoring movies and TV shows:
  • The Office (US; Season 2) (58 stars)
  • Raiders of the Loak Ark (58 stars)
  • Arrested Development (season 1) (57 stars)
Of the movies and TV shows rated by 11 people, the only ones I found with a perfect, 55 star rating were:
  • Amelie
  • The Godfather
  • The Godfather part two
  • The Empire Strikes Back
  • The Office (UK; season 1)
  • The Shining
Most of the rest of other high-scoring movies and shows had 11 ratings, a few had 12. I have not distinguished them by number of ratings, only by total number of stars.
  • The Office (UK; season 2) (54)
  • Rushmore (54)
  • Star Wars (54)
  • The Big Lebowski (53)
  • Bottle Rocket (53)
  • Dr. Strangelove (53)
  • Goodfellas (53)
  • The Incredibles (53)
  • The Office (US; season 1) (53)
  • The Royal Tenenbaums (53)
  • Fargo (52)
  • Pulp Fiction (52)
  • Raising Arizona (52)
  • Chinatown (51)
  • The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou (51)
  • Punch-Drunk Love (51)
  • 2001: A Space Odyssey (50)
  • Blade Runner (50)
  • Citizen Kane (50)
  • Election (50)
  • Magnolia (50)
  • The Shawshank Redemption (50)

Just missing having 50 stars:
  • The Office Special (49)
  • Taxi Driver (49)
Directors appearing more than once among these top-rated films and shows:

  • Wes Anderson (4)
  • Joel & Ethan Coen (3)
  • Stanley Kubrick (3)
  • Paul Thomas Anderson (2)
  • Francis Ford Coppola (2)
  • Martin Scorsese (2)

In terms of TV shows, Ricky Gervais & Stephen Merchant were well-represented (all UK episodes of The Office are listed). The first two seasons of the American edition of The Office were also very well-liked.

Cool. I like this. Now I wonder where the biggest polarizations are...ex: me, George, and Victor gave Hostel 1 star, you and Ryan gave it 4.

And which movies have the lowest stars?!?

haha...not that you have the time to figure these things out, BUT IF YOU DID it would be really cool! :)

I actually spent a fair amount of time thinking about how to measure the least-liked films. It's tougher, though, than quantifying the best-liked.

For this post, I didn't bother counting anything that had less than 11 people rating it I suppose we could set a minimum number of ratings and then see which film has the fewest stars, but even that is tricky. I think, for the most part, movies we don't expect to like are screened out of Netflix queues.

Finding movies with polarized ratings (e.g. Hostel) would also be fun.

I'd like to hear any other suggestions.
